Colleagues and Parents,

In December and January, NCFASD Informed will be presenting programs related to FASD and Mental Health Diagnoses. It is the overlapping characteristics of these two foci that are major contributors to the fact that 90% of those with an FASD have a missing diagnosis or are misdiagnosed despite the alarming FASD prevalence rate of 1 in 20.  The behaviors of those with an FASD mimic those with certain common mental health diagnoses, but these diagnoses belie the presence of underlying brain damage due to exposure to alcohol in utero. (Register for each event by using the blue link)

December 3  Kathy Hotelling, Board Chair, and Myles Himmerleich, Canadian motivational speaker and co-author of pioneering study on health and physical problems among those with FASD, will be featured on Thursdays with NAMI:  FASD: What is it and How can Families Cope?

January 5   Kathy Hotelling will explore the overlapping characteristics between common mental health diagnoses and FASD at the NAMI Durham Educational Meeting.  Register

January 12  FASD:  Missed Diagnosis or Missing Diagnosis will be the topic of a AHEC hour long webinar (CEUs available) with Kathy Hotelling.

We hope that you can join in one or all of these informative hours to become FASD informed.

With hope,

Kathy Hotelling
